As Tamil Nadu- Karnataka are the latest to revert back to the 50% limit for theatre occupancy, newly released films in the last two weeks and one that are scheduled release in coming weeks in these two languages have lined up before OTT to get release dates.
Within a few days of Kannada's Puneeth Rajkumar's Yuvarathnaa getting released in movie halls, State Government announced the 50% limit on seat occupancy. Puneeth met the CM and asked him to implement the order after the weekend was over. In 6 days, the film collected Rs 40 cr gross at the theatres. Amazon that bought the rights paid Rs 20 cr for Yuvarathnaa while it paid Rs 18 cr for KGF1. The producer of KGF1 and 2 is also producer of Yuvarathnaa.
In Kerala, a 50 day gap is needed and Mammooty's The Priest is coming on Amazon Prime - April 14th. `One' will follow and majority of the films released for Vishu (Apr8 ) which are in medium budget with heroes like Kunchacko Boban, Shane Wayne, Biju Menon and female centred film of Nayanthara and Manju Warrier have earned critical praise but did poorly at the box office will head for OTT. Tovino's action thriller Kala too is headed for OTT.
Tamil Nadu has relaxed norms and allowed extra one show till next Friday, After this, the travel restrictions within city including night curfew is expected. Many films in Tamil- Kannada that were to release in May at theatres will now opt for straight OTT download.
