Mani slams Rs 1000 Cr film craze / Meenakshi Chowdhary with Chiyaan

 Mani Ratnam when asked about the Rs 1000 crore club films, he felt irritated and answered : “Which is more important—box office or quality films? Earlier, audiences focused on quality. Now, it’s all about business. I hope this shift doesn’t kill quality in the future. I can’t make films just for the box office.”. Kamal Haasan is a co- Producer of Thug Life and going by what we hear the investment in hard cash is by RKFI and Madras Talkies contribution is Mani Ratnam’s direction.

Now audience of today that made Bahubaali – KGF – Pushpa franchise into Rs 1000 cr club cannot be called to be focussed on business and not quality and we cannot say that Director’s of these film compromised on quality to get more footfalls.  None of these franchises can be said to have gone out of the way to reach out to audience in a crass way. These films struck a chord with all regions in India. Take the case of Mani Ratnam films and his last outing PS 2. It worked largely with Tamil movie goers and nothing beyond it.

At one time quality films meant National awards and Mani was never a contender for this award. The box office masala formula is very much inherent in his films. For the first time probably the marketing is vey aggressive with Thug Life. Thogh Kamal speaks volumes about Ravi K Chandran’s cinematography , trailor is talked about for two things- Kamal- Abhirami liplock and Kamal’s I am your Adam seductive line with Trisha . Is Trisha the mistress of Kamal and his adopted son STR is dating her  is the problem? Add to it the Sugar Baby song.

We have seen biggest box office openers fall on Monday and finally go out by next Friday. Public is enamoured by the the boasts of entering Rs 100 cr club in one Day. It may matter to the Actor’s fans and his ego. Bottom of Mani’s line is that – Look Don’t evaluate me with likes of people whose films are in Rs 1000 cr club .I simply have no idea on how to make it jell with all kinds of audience. I am happy with my niche audience .

While his response sounds idealistic, it also feels outdated. Does he really believe that only bad films make 1000 crores? Were Baahubali, Dangal, or RRR lacking in quality? Were Jawan or KGF poor films? . It was Rajamouli who inspired Mani to make Ponniyin Selvan into two parts. Meenakshi Chaudhary has been making headlines for being the frontrunner to play the female lead opposite Kollywood star Vikram in the latter’s 63rd film, tentatively titled Chiyaan63. As per the latest buzz, Meenakshi has finally signed on the dotted lines. However, an official announcement is awaited to confirm the news.

Chiyaan63 will be going on floors in a few weeks. This highly anticipated biggie will be directed by Mandela and Maaveeran fame Madonne Ashwin, while Arun Viswa is bankrolling the project. • The screenplay and dialogue work of Kaithi 2 has begun, shoot will begin from December 2025. Last stages of Coolie post production work also happening simultaneously.
• Vijay is set to shoot for his final schedule as an actor during the first week of May for Jana Nayagan. The TN rights of the film have been bought for 90 crores by Romeo. Vijay will be playing an IPL officer turned politician in this film.
• The final schedule of Suriya45 is completed (Climax Block which was shot in Prasad Studios), as Suriya moves on to Retro promotions.
• Thug Life will be having a grand release in the Hindi Multiplexes, and will only be available on OTT platforms 8 weeks post release. Kamal Haasan has been confirmed to be a major screenwriter in the film. STR and Trisha romantic melody song from May 7th. The trailer and audio launch is locked for May 16th.
• Sivakarthikeyan’s Madharaasi is experiencing difficulties regarding the final schedule of the film. A 12 days call sheet is needed from SK with his long beard look, but he isn’t willing to grow it out right now due to Parashakthi shoot. Solutions regarding this issue are currently being solved. • Shooting of Dhanush’s Idli Kadai has been wrapped up with the whole cast. The movie is set for release on October 1.
• Kaantha, starring Dulquer Salmaan is in the final stages of post production. An OTT deal with Netflix has been struck. The film will likely be releasing in July 2025, an announcement can be expected soon.
• Fahadh Faasil has been roped in for Jailer 2, along with Suraj V (VDS), and Sujith Shankar (Pani). Shooting is happening in Kerala currently.
• Pre-production works for Suriya46 have been happening on full flow. The music sittings have started last. Mamitha has been locked for the film, and Keerthy Suresh is in talks. GV Prakash has been signed as the music director. Shoot from May 15th.
• Pa Ranjith’s next directorial is going to be titled Vettuvam. The film primarily stars Arya, Dinesh, and Sobhita.The shoot has been happening at a brisk pace in Kumbakon. First schedule has already been completed.

Indian 3 starts / LYCA- RAJINIKANTH _ PRITHVIRAJ combo ? . Empuran out of IMAX/ CHIYAAN BACK

 Kamal Haasan – Shankar and Lyca have agreed to complete the remaining portions of Indian 3 on a tight budget . Shankar has dropped the idea to shoot a song and instead just do what is needed to get the film ready for release. Without the song , it needs 30 days shoot and pre- production for this schedule is on.

Lyca is to collaborate with Rajinikanth and from what we hear is that Prithviraj is on Director’s list. In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, Prithviraj reveals that he didn’t have to urge Rajinikanth to extend his support to the film. “When I went to his home in Chennai and showed him the trailer, I didn’t ask him to tweet it. When I came back, Soundarya called me and said that appa would like to tweet the trailer and asked me if I can send them the link," he told the channel.

Lyca who pulled out of Empuran has no ill feelings with the Director and it was a financial decision to pull out and nothing personal. Prithviraj is co-producer of Empuran along with Mohanlal. Lal Salaam produced by Lyca is finally coming on OTT. Only project on hand is Jason Sanjay’s film.

Empuran is likely to be out of IMAX screens in India as to redit the film to put in the 20 off censor cuts will cost Rs 43 lakhs. After one week run and declining collection, Producers may not put in this money. After 7 days Empuran in Kerala has collected Rs 73 cr Nett and in Tamil – Rs2.64 cr, Telugu -Rs 2.34 cr and Rs 0.19 cr . The Malayalam version has collected Rs 10 crore in Karntaka and mainly from Bengaluru. Overseas Nett is Rs 30 crore.

Vikram’s Veera Dheera Sooran 2 despite good reviews is moving towards an average hit. It was predicted that the film will be a modest hit and be a relief after Thangalan disaster. The films collection for Day 1 was lost over a fight between Producers and those who bought the OTT. Vikram had charged Rs 30 crores but it was both parts. There was no need for Vikram or S J Suryah to shell out any money for the film release.

Film has collected Rs 27 crores in Tamil Nadu and overseas Rs 7 crores. The on road promotions by Chiyaan even after release has be an eyeopener to many. It is still holding good with Rs 2 crore on Day 7. Till Good Bad and Ugly arrives, it can rope in more money. Chiyyan core Kerala area became inaccessible with Empuran wave. Telugu saw two straight releases and one- Mad Square went on to be  a blockbuster.

Empuran advance booking figures raise manipulation doubts

Empuran advance booking ifigres are manipulated and done under the system of corporate bookings is the charge levelled by many in the trade. Main reason is that Veera Dheera Sooran of Vikram, Nithin Robinhood and Mad Square 2 in Telugu States are lagging behind this the Tamil and Telugu dubbing version of Empuran in booking platform. Vikram film advance booking has come as a shock. These films now depend on word of mouth opinion to get the crowds, It was only today in Chennai and yesterday in Hyderabad that Empuran conducted a media meet. VDS has had Vikram- S J surya and Dushara Vijayan all over internet media as part of promotions. At the Chennai press meet the query was raised as to how a Malayalam film has crossed 10 cr advance booking which is more than a Bollywood film, Prithviraj updated it and said it was 60 crores and it was something that they too did not expect and hoped that the film lived up to the expectations. One trade expert on social media wrote, “The film is already getting a lot of advance bookings. So there is really no reason to make corporate bookings. This is totally unnecessary. Don’t overdo corporate bookings so much that it becomes clear to even the common public.” he practice of corporate and self-bookings has often been called out in Bollywood when films like Pathaan, Chhaava, Dunki, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani, and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan were accused of similar tactics, even though those accounted for only 5-10% of total sales.

In the case of Empuraan, it seems the self-bookings have touched the level of Sky Force, where more than 50% of the ticket sales were rigged, according to experts like Komal Nahta. Incidentally Prithviraj the Empuran Director was co-producer of Sky Force. As M9 puts it- However, the real test will be in the film’s footfalls post-release. If Empuraan sustains strong occupancies after day one, it will validate the genuine interest among audiences. However, if the film witnesses a sharp drop post the initial weekend, it would further fuel speculation about the advance bookings. Salman Khan and Chiyaan Vikram threat to Mohanlal / Anirudh is South highest paid composer

Empuran run at North India and Tamil Nadu will not be smooth as the two regions are seeing the release of two biggies- Salman Khan- ARM Sikandar in Hindi and Chiyaan Vikram Veera Dheera Sooran. At first Sikandar was to release on March 30th and thereby giving Empuran a three day run in North but the new date has put te brakes on that. Vikarm film is coming on March27. This date has come after OTT platform has scheduled it. Veera Dheera Sooran: Part 2 will hit the big screens on March 27, 2025. Initially, it was supposed to be released in January, but plans shifted due to scheduling clashes with OTT platforms. Given the budget, Empyran needs a free run outside Kerala to recover it. In GCC countries, Empuran will be hit as Salman Khan release for Eid has always been a celebration.

While there’s no official confirmation about the same will be coming, a few weeks back, the industry buzz was that that Anirudh has become highest paid music composer of the South and he received an unbelievable hike for Jailer 2. For those who aren’t not in the know, the and it was told publicly by Rajinikanth himself , Anirudh the music composer was paid a sum of 10 crores for Jailer. As Ani’s music played a crucial role in Jailer’s blockbuster success, he has been given an 80% hike. Atlee - Vijay Sethupathi next - Chiyaan Vikram- Kamal are OTT flops - Lost Ladies out of Oscars

Atlee said during the press meet that he will be the producer for the Vijay Sethupathi starrer which will be directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan who is best known for the film ‘Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom’. Vijay Sethupathi will be playing the lead character in this untitled project. The filmmaker and Vijay Sethupathi had earlier joined forces for the 2023 film Jawan. Chiyaan Vikram this year had only one release, Thangalaan, that had a disastrous run at the box office, earning 71.45 crore worldwide. The film arrived on Netflix unceremoniously on December 10. However, it had a lukewarm response on OTT as well.

In the debut week of its OTT run, the Tamil action drama as per Netflix’s data from December 9 to December 15, garnered a viewership of 1.5 million. This is one of the least viewed South Indian films in its debut week on Netflix.

Oscars shortlist is out. #LaapataaLadies is a very well made, entertaining movie (I enjoyed it), but was absolutely the wrong choice to represent India for the best #InternationalFeatureFilm category. As expected, it lost. When are we going to realize.. year after year.. we are choosing the wrong films. There are so many excellent movies made, and we should be winning the #InternationalFeatureFilm category every year! Unfortunately we live in a "Mainstream Bollywood" bubble, where we cannot look beyond films that we ourselves find entertaining. Instead we should just look for good films made by film-makers who are uncompromising in their art.. low budget or big budget.. star or no star.. just great artistic cinema. On September 27th, DeMonte Colony starring Arulnithi and directed by Ajay willsteam on Zee5. Made at cost of Rs 15 crores, film collected Rs 85 crores. A sequel to the hit film, it was pitted against Thangalaan. Andhagan the Prashanth comeback film that was released before this film is yet to find an OTT release and in Chennai, it continues to be screened in some theatres.

Thangalaan sinks or not ? Why Sai Pallavi in Gargi and Dulquer in Sita Ramam overlooked ?

We usually wait for a Monday and then give the box office verdict. This time, we feel that there is no need as we feel a miracle cannot happen. We are talking about Thangalaan of the Vikram- Pa Ranjith combo. As far we see the film in South has touched Rs 29 crores and worldwide it is Rs 43.5 croes. The film opened big in Tamil Nadu and it was Rs 11 crores but the shocker was that on non working days it slumped and to a miserable Rs 3 crores. After taking the entire holidays, the total is Rs 25 crores. Vikram who had a good opening in Kerala has touched a miserable figure in thousands !!!. Telugu was slightly better. Gokulam Gopalan who bought Thangalaan Kerala had announced that a part of the proceeds would be given to Wayanad relief. Wonder what that amount is ?. Meanwhile Producer Studio Green has claimed Rs 53 crores in three days. It claims that Monday has a Rs 3 crore advance booking. Yet another Rayaan like claim. Rayaan of Dhanush had a similar start and fizzled out. However it had no big or small films as opposition and has limped to Rs 94 crores. It was released on July 24th. Now Dhanush fans say that with Rs 6 crores more the film will enter Rs 100 crore club. They are hopeful as Thangalaan has dropped. Rayaan is coming on August 23 on Prime. So al Rayaan needs is Rs 6 crores in six days. The silent winner is Demonte Colony 2 and it has got Rs 15 crores. More screens are coming in for the film.

Now Sai Pallavi fans say that her role in Gargi was any day better than Nithya Menen in Thiruchitrambalam. Now they say that Sai had slammed Kashmir Files and so she was dumped. Nithya on the other hand asks why an actress who does light hearted roles be given a best actress award ? Good question. Dhanush says that Nithya’s National award is his personal victory !!!. If Mammootty opted out of National awards by not entering the fray, his son Dulquer’s fans ask as to how Sita Ramam was not given a single award and instead a right wing Karthikeya 2 got one. Legal hurdle for Vikram- Suriya film release - Nayanthara is Maharani

Thangalaan starring Chiyan Vikram due for release this Friday and Suriya’s Kanguva due October are facing legal issues. Madras High Court directed Production company Studio Green to pay Rs. 1 Crore before 14th August and file a compliance report with the High Court on the same day. The court further directed another Rs 1 Crore to be paid before the release of the Kanguva movie. financier Arjunlal Sunderdas after he was declared insolvent in 2019, the division bench had allowed a petition filed by the Official Assignee directing Studio Green to pay a sum of Rs. 10,35,00,000/- with an interest of 18% p.a. The official assignee had filed the current execution petition after the 2019 order was not complied with. The official assignee had sought to attach Studio Green's future movies till the orders were complied with. Studio Green stance was that it had taken money from Arjunlal for pre- production but as the financier could pay further, Studio Green handed him remake rights of three films to him for the money it took. Court dismissed this claim as there was no evidence to prove this. We hear that Sivakarthikeyan’s Amaran trailor is not releasing on August 15th as scheduled as Producer Kamal Haasan is not happy with the outcome. On August 15th, the Prasanth starrer Andhagan and Vikram’s Thangalaan are releasing. Prasanth is first cousin as his father is maternal uncle of Vikram. Vikram’s mother is Rajeswari is youngest sister of Thiagarajan , father of Prasanth. Vikram’s real name is Kennedy John Victor and his father Vinod Raj was an actor. It seems almost 23 years back Prasanth’s Majnu and Vikram’s Kasi clashed at box office. Kasi gave Vikram a good name as he played blind man in it while Majnu was a big hit. Reports indicate that Thalapathy Vijay will release Andhagan anthem song sung by Anirudh and Vijay Sethupathy and cisual concept by Prabhu Deva and choreographed by Sandy. Prasanth is sharing scrn space with Vijay and Prabhu Deva in G O A T. Prasanth as hero was Johny released in 2018 and co starred in a Telugu film with Ram Charan and released in 2019. Vikram last release was PS 2 last year. Thangalaan trailor has created a huge buzz for the looks of Vikram and also that it is directed by Pa Ranjith , who has a great following among the youth. Ravi Teja film Mr Bachchan is also releasing on same date and it will be a competition to Vikram film in two Telugu States. It seems that the OTT company that holds Ravi Teja film had wanted this date for theatre release. Mr. Bachchan is a Telugu remake of the popular Ajay Devgn starrer Raid.

Indian 2 South languages will stream from August 2 on NetFlix . As per multiplex rules, Hindi will not release till 8 weeks after theatre release. Shankar’s next Game Changer will release on Christmas said Producer Dil Raju at pre- release event of Rayaan in Hyderabad.

We hear that if Dhanush Raayan takes June 13th release date, then it would clash with Vikram Thangalaan. Vikram film is directed by Pa Ranjith and Raayan is directed by Dhanush himself, Last time both the actors clashed was with Thodari and Iru Mugam. Interestingly E4 Mukesh Mehta who was behind the launch of Dhruv Vikram has bought the Kerala rights of Thangalaan.Dhruv Vikram and Director Sudha Kongara are teaming up for a project bankrolled by Shibu Thameen is what our guys tells us. They were digging up on the project Bison Kaalamadan directed by Mari Selvaraj with Dhruv. We told you about Anupama heroine oriented film backed by Lyca and reason for this project to come through is that the actress has a solid role in Bison and makers are confident that she will solidify her position in Kollywood .
