Both the films have subjects that is very topical. Karnan talks about the high handed action by the police for a seemingly minor issue and fit flares up to be a full blown caste issue. The other film Mandela takes a satirical look at the bribing of voters.
Just two days back, two Dalit youths were brutally murdered by a mob belonging to a caste at Arkonam, which is just two hours drive from Chennai. The Arkonam murder shows that things have nomil debut isn Tayat changed since 1995 Tirunelveli Kodiyankulam caste riots sue iswhich is the basis for the film's subject.
Dhanush does full justice to the title role and director Mari Selvaraj gives a wholesome entertainer.. The strength of the film is the screenplay and dialogues. Add to this the cinematography and music and with good all round performances ,Karnan gives a strong message that lower castes cannot be taken for granted. Rajisha Vijayan Tamil debut is ok as the character is not long enough and sort of stereotyped.
Mandela tells us how the voter can use his vote to better the life of the society and not go in for a temporary personal gain . Comedian Yogi Baby stuns you in the title role with a restrained performance. Yogi has a serious role in Karnan too and does full justice.
Quite a relief from the hero v/s underworld- corporate baddies formula.
