Kantara climax for Suriya Karuppu / Tamil Nadu Buyer of Jana Nayagan Backs out

 The latest update is that Suriya’s Karuppu will feature a climax sequence inspired by Kantara. The story revolves around the demigod Karuppasamy, who protects his people through Saravanan. In the climax, Suriya’s character is said to transform into Karuppasamy, delivering a powerful and emotional ending similar to Kantara’s impact.

To make the film even more gripping, the team has decided to shoot an additional action block, responding to the strong audience reaction to Kantara. Suriya has allotted a three-day call sheet starting November 15 for this new sequence, which is expected to raise the film’s scale and intensity.

Once this final schedule wraps up, the entire shoot will be completed, and the makers are likely to announce Karuppu’s release date soon.

According to Tamil media reports, the Tamil Nadu theatrical rights of Jana Nayagan were sold for ₹100 crore to a distributor. However, the distributor has allegedly not paid the full amount and is now considering backing out of the deal. The reason cited is the political risk involved in investing heavily in a Vijay-starrer at this time.Industry buzz suggests that Jana Nayagan contains strong political references and punch dialogues, which could stir controversy and provoke rival reactions. This has reportedly made other distributors hesitant to buy the entire Tamil Nadu rights, with many now preferring to purchase individual area rights instead.Meanwhile, KVN Productions, the film’s producer, is still looking to sell the complete TN rights to a single distributor. As of now, Jana Nayagan is facing political issues in its theatrical business, and it remains to be seen how these issues will be resolved.

Pay Rs 30 crores or Kanguva has no release says Court

 Today two cases against Kanguva  cropped up in Madras High Court today. A few days ago Studio Green the Producers cleared Rs 100 crores due to Reliance. After that a case pending filed by kegal assignee for a suit filed to recover money due to financier Arjundas who filed  insolvency. Studio Green owes Rs 10 crore to Arjundas and in an earlier hearing the court asked the producer to deposit Rs 1 crore before Thangalaan release and rest amount of Rs 20 crores by November 7^th. In today’s hearing Studio Green deposited Rs 1 crore but pleaded inability to raise Rs 9 crores plus 11% interest.  Next case by Fuel Technology who that it was given rights to exploit Hindi dubbing rights for three films. Out of these two films= Muthaiyaa direction film with Suriya and a film by Lingusamy starring Allu Arjun were dropped and only Thana sera Kootam with Suriya and Vignesh Shivan was completed and released. This film’s Hindi rights was however given to PEN India by K E Gananvel who as First Defendant in the name of Adnah Arts had taken .6,60,00,000/ and sold it in the banner of Studio Green.

Rs 5,00,00,000 was adjusted towards this film and remaining Rs 1,60,00,000 was due to Fuel Technology. With 36% interest as per agreement, a total of Rs 11,00,00,000 crore was outstanding. A total of Rs 31 crores has to be paid by November 13 or film will not release. Studio Green told the court that if the film was not released on said date, it will not be able to pay those who are asking for money. The petitioners pointed out that the film producer had deposited Rs 100 crores to pay Reliance.

As per trade the production company has clocked Rs 190 crores pre- release sales within India and overseas. As per advance bookings, a Rs 15 crore sales was expected but this seems to be not possible as the number of screens that it desired is not got due to Amaran going strong and also the theatre share percentage issues. Added to this the low depression that threatens to turn into a storm and last till November 15^th is a major threat for Tamil Nadu business. North India theatre advance bookings are also weak.

Legal hurdle for Vikram- Suriya film release - Nayanthara is Maharani

Thangalaan starring Chiyan Vikram due for release this Friday and Suriya’s Kanguva due October are facing legal issues. Madras High Court directed Production company Studio Green to pay Rs. 1 Crore before 14th August and file a compliance report with the High Court on the same day. The court further directed another Rs 1 Crore to be paid before the release of the Kanguva movie. financier Arjunlal Sunderdas after he was declared insolvent in 2019, the division bench had allowed a petition filed by the Official Assignee directing Studio Green to pay a sum of Rs. 10,35,00,000/- with an interest of 18% p.a. The official assignee had filed the current execution petition after the 2019 order was not complied with. The official assignee had sought to attach Studio Green's future movies till the orders were complied with. Studio Green stance was that it had taken money from Arjunlal for pre- production but as the financier could pay further, Studio Green handed him remake rights of three films to him for the money it took. Court dismissed this claim as there was no evidence to prove this. Sivakarthikeyan multiplex, Kamal as farmer , Suriya as Karnan

Among the young heroes of Kollywood, Sivakarthikeyan will be the first to own a multiplex theatre. Sunil Narang of Asian Cinemas revealed in Hyderabad that they are collboarating with the Kollywood actor for a multiplex. Asian Cinemas collaborated with Mahesh Babu and bulit AMB Cinemas and with Allu Arjun for AAA Cinemas. Yesterday the multiplex of Allu Arjun was opened. It is not clear whether the multiplex of Sivakarthikeyan will be located in Chennai or in any other part of the State. Yesteryear heroes Sivaji Ganesan and Nagesh owned theatres and among heroines Jayaprada. Jayaprada’s theatre continues to function in Chennai and other two have given way for commercial complexes. Many actors like Vijay and Vijaykanth have marriage halls in Chennai. Allu Arjun bought Sathyam cinemas located at Ameerpet and with Asian Cinemas converted it to a multiplex. The first film to be screened is Prabhas Adipurush.

Sources say that after finishing work on Indian 2 , Kamal Haasan will move to his next with director H Vinoth in October. Vinoth gave a full script to the actor and the latter has given a few suggestions. Meanwhile Vijay Sethupathi is being approached for this project and sources indicate that unlike in Vikram, Vijay will be playing a positive character in the film. Reports from Tollywood indicate that Kamal Haasan had demanded Rs 150 crores as salary to play the antongonist in Prabhas Project K. Kamal will join the unit in August and will play a never before seen vataar. Kamal called for a meeting with members of the Tradiional Rice Conservation Centre and with Vinoth had discussed about the latest methods in farming. Looks like Kamal will be playing a farmer in the film. Meanwhile fans revisited Dasavatharam yesterday as it was released 15 years on this day. Suriya connection to Oscar documentary Producer - Lizzy Anthony first Tamil actress in INBA Award

 Guneet Monga, women producer who was involved in the production of the Oscar-winning documentary "The Elephant Whisperers," was also a producer for the Tamil film "Soorarai Pottru," which starred Suriya. Although heavily promoted for the Oscars in 2021, the film did not win any awards. As a result, Suriya became one of the Academy members eligible to vote from India. The film is now being remade in Hindi with Akshay Kumar, but Monga is no longer one of the producers. She has been replaced by Vikram Malhotra of Suriya's company, which led to a lawsuit filed by Sikhya Entertainment against Suriya over the rights to the book by Deccan Airlines founder Captain G R Gopinath. However, the verdict went in favor of Suriya as he proved that he had made the payment for the copyright of the book.

When it was announced that Monga's produced documentary was in the running for the Oscars, Suriya was the first to congratulate her on Twitter, and she thanked him for his support. Suriya also voted this time as an Academy member. In 2019, Monga's documentary "Period. End of Sentence" won the Oscar for Documentary Short Subject.

In an interview with Thanthi TV, the couple Bomman and Belli, who were featured in the documentary, revealed that they did not receive any money from the documentary makers as they were employees of the State Forest Department and were told that they were not permitted to receive any money for such activities. However, they were happy that their efforts were well received. The elephant Raghu in the documentary was said to have been released into the forests by the Forest Department, and Bomman tried unsuccessfully to track him down. He is now working in Dindigul but was in Mudumalai Forest at the time of filming.

Radha, a professor at GRT College in Coimbatore, where Kartiki Gonsalves the director of documentary studied VISCOM, said that the Oscar win is a response to those who asked, "What are you going to achieve by studying VISCOM?" She explained that Kartiki had followed the couple and the elephants for six years and condensed it into a 41-minute documentary. Radha had been following her student from the poster release to the Oscar nomination. College Vice Principal Dr. KK Ramachandran said that the college had planned to hold a function to honor their old student after the documentary began streaming on Netflix, and now it will be to honor the Oscar winner. Lizzy Antony is the first Tamil actress to win the 100 Outstanding Women award. The Indian National Bar Association (INBA) has been awarding 'THE PHENOMENAL SHE' award to 100 outstanding women every year since 2018 to honor outstanding women who have achieved in every field in India. Every year, a book called 'THE PHENOMENAL SHE' containing the details of the awardees is also published. Accordingly, in the year 2023, 'The Phenomenal She' (THE PHENOMENAL SHE) award ceremony with the release of the 5th edition was held on March-11.

This year, Delhi High Court Judge Rekha Palli, Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge Lisa Gill, Rajya Sabha Member Dr. Sasikala Pushpa Ramasamy, Padma Shri Awardee Dr. Soma Ghose, Padma Shri Vadsava, IAS Officer Soumya Sharma, State Adivasi Welfare Minister Ms. Renuka Singh and many others. Has BJP bought Suriya's silence with National award ? Controversy unboxed

 

Can an Actor’s Manager influence National jury to give an award to his client who is constantly expressing views that oppose Central Government policies?. YouTube film critic Blue Sattai Maran has tweeted that another YouTube channel Valai Pechu had raised this doubt before the award announcement that the manager in the jury would ensure awards for the film produced by his client or for the actor itself. As it has come true, Maran has asked for a reply. Meanwhile a Tamil film Thaen which was critically acclaimed was omitted out of the final shortlist and Valai Pechu Channel alleges that the director had got a call from DIFF asking his details etc but later dumped it. Reason being that Tamannah agreed to act in the film overlooking the advice of Thangadurai who is also her Manager. It is alleged that the Manager saw that Tamannaah did not do the film and hence he torpedoed the film’s chances at the award committee.

A FB post by senior journalist Meeran  says that  Anupama Subramanian of Deccan Chronicle who was in the panel  of National awards was instrumental in getting several awards for Tamil- Malayalam films. . Out of  ten  awards for Tamil films, five went to Suriya and his film Soorarai Pottru.

BJP Tamil Nadu should be in state of disbelief. Suriya after Kamal Hassan, is most vocal in opposing the policies of the Central Government. BJP Youth wing threatened the actor with legal action if he continued with his anti- NEET tirade. Even his film ` Jai Bhim’ was attacked by no less a leader than H Raja. The last outburst by  Suriya  was against the proposed changes to Cinematography Act. He termed it as a move to strangle the voice of expression. The New Education Policy bill too was opposed by Suriya. An interesting tweet by H Raja of BJP  who asked –  You opposed children studying three languages under NEP and you release Jai Bhim in five languages. Suriya just clicked the Like button. Some of the utterances by Jyotika about the Big Temple in Thanjavur did not go well with BJP.

Actor Karthi ( younger brother of Suriya) recently criticized the Environmental Impact Assessment Draft. BJP’s leaders from film industry like Gayathri Raghuram had slammed the actor brothers. Rajinikanth as usual in his diplomatic way lauded Suriya for making the Education policy a topic of discussion and in the same breath asked him to stick to films and not enter politics. Actor Shivakumar discourses on Hindu scriptures and promotion of Yoga is the only sound from that family  that is  music to BJP.

Thangadurai is synonymous with FilmFare in South.  Filmfare did not allot much space to South Indian films and close to the South awards, it did a token attendance by devoting a few pages to the winners. Later it started printing separate covers with regional actors for each South language and had it distributed in that region only .  Coming back  to Thangadurai, somewhere along the line, Mumbai girls landing up in Chennai were imported by him. Many actresses (remember Nagma- Kiran being one among them) who hit big time had Thanga as manager. He was the man with Midas touch.   Film Fare award shows in South became synonymous with Thangadurai.

Though, he was successful with heroines, in the hero category, it was not the same.  After almost two decades in the field, it was with Suriya that he got a STAR hero in his client list. Here again, it was Jyotika for whom he was the manager, that helped him.

On record, Thangadurai has a service record of being with Film Fare for more than two decades and is in every way qualified to be on the national award jury.  The moot question is – Can Thangadurai get 9 others in the jury to toes his line, if BJP does not approve it ? (means the I&B ministry ). So, BJP has bought the silence of Suriya ?. Counter argument could be that BJP does not interfere in such matters.

The Thaen film allegation is probably an outcome of it being shortlisted by the South panel and send to national jury and it being rejected. All those who asked that if Thangadurai can get Suriya the best actor award, then why did he not get his other client Tamannaah the best actress award ?. She  had only Telugu films releases  in 2021 . For your information, her manager for Telugu is not Thangadurai.

Suriya's Pan Indian entry with Etharkkum Thunindhavan ?

 

Among the young crop of Tamil heroes, Suriya will be first  mass heroe to have a Pan Indian release of his film Etharkkum Thunindhavan directed by Pandiraj. The reason for the move to ave All India release is said to be the demand from Bollywood trade that the film be promoted as a straight Hindi film. Bollywood trade feels tat Jai Bhim has given Suriya a wide reach iamong North Indian audience. The film has given the actor a far reach to the Hindi hinterland. Audiences in the B- C tier cities and villages that had access to OTT have watched it and liked his performance and the film.

Producers Sun Pictures have planned a Feb 4 release. Surprisingly the film Soorarai Pottru in which Suriya played the role of Capt. Gopinath did not take him beyond the metros. It was Jai Bhim that has taken the actor to the common man in Hindi belt. Sun Pictures does have the resource to promote the film . Pandiraj two previous outings ( Kadaikutty Singam) were blockbusters. The rural subject would appeal to Hindi audience, feels trade

The coming line up of films by Suriya are with directors Vetrimaaran, Bala, Sudha Kongara, Siva ( Annaatthe fame)), and Lokesh Kanakraj ( revive early project Irumbukai Maayavi) . Suriya is also producer of Soorarai Pottru in Hindi. Etharkkum Thunindhavan will be a theater release for Suriya after a long time. SP released last week in Thiruvanthapuram saw actors fans celebrate it in a big way.

Amazon Prime to censor Suriya's Jai Bhim - Prithviraj turns Bollywood producer -

 Suriya's Jai Bhim has been certified with an A certificate. Amazon Prime who is releasing this film directly on their platform for Diwali want it to be removed of all portions that the censors had objected. Prithviraj who was the producer of Driving License in Malayalam joins hands with Karan Johar in producing remake of the film in Hindi.  Akshay Kumar plays Prithviraj role and Emraan Hashmi essays Suraj Venjaramoodu role. The filming takes place in UK.

Nithya Menen who agreed to play wife to Pawan Kalyan in the Telegu remake of Ayyapanum Koshiyum has been paid a whooping Rs 85 lakhs, says a source. This role was first offered to Sai Pallavi and to many other leading heroines. No heroine with a big market and films opposite big heroes was willing to accept this role as it had little scope for even being a girl who comes only in songs. Finally as the makers wanted a known face, they agreed to pay Rs 85 lakhs to Nithya Menen who asked for Rs 1 cr. Compared to Pawan's salary of Rs 50 cr, this is peanuts. For heroine with no solo standing in any South language industries , this amount is quite high for an actress from Malayalam film industry feels many.

Jai Bhim certified for adult viewing is said to have a running time of two hours and 44 minutes. The censors keeping in mind the possibility of the film raising the shackles of the upper castes represented by right wing groups, had combed the dialogues and visuals . The cuts that they offered were unacceptable and it was then decided that mutually a adult certificate was okay.

Amazon Prime releasing on Diwali feels that given the running time, the dialogues can be muted and some objectionable visuals removed before screening. OTT platform is dubbing it in Hindi- Marathi languages and here too the slogan Jai Bhim is associated with Ambedkar followers. Overall, the film will have a re-edit. Last year on Diwali, Soorarai Pootru, from Suriya was released, It turned out to be the biggest hit on OTT during pandemic times. Rajisha Vijayan who acted in Karnan opposite Dhanush plays an important role in  Jai Bhim.

Suriya's four new movies to premiere on Amazon Prime

 In a landmark deal, Actor Suriya's 2D Entertainment House will premiere   Jai Bhim, Udanpirappe, Oh My doG and Raman Aandalum Ravanan Aandalum directly on Amazon Prime. The list of films   reveal that it is a fine balancing act between the Actor Suriya who has to depend on theaters for big bucks and producer Suriya who wants to make films of  his choice and cater to a discerning audience that values content. The only film that has Suriya acting in these four films is Jai Bhim. On the floors ,he has Vetrimaaran directed film Vaadivaasal ( Hindi dubbing rights sold already for Rs 25 cr) which is produced by Kalaipuli Thanu. and Etharkkum Thunindhavan directed by Pandiraj and produced by Sun Pictures.

Suriya's pro Dalit stance to promote Soorarai Pottru or his political stance ?

 

The posturing of actor Suriya as a pro-Dalit in a film based on a Brahmin entrepreneur, the statement on NEET issued by him smacks of an anti Brahmanical views -  is this  a move to signal his  political posture in coming times or is it as BJP thinks a ploy to give a boost to an upcoming film ?. One will have to wait and watch.

Two things that took place seem to have a pattern. The song Mannurunda Mela that was released some time ago and from upcoming film Soorarai Pottru in which Suriya plays the central character based loosely on Air Deccan founder Capt. G R Gopinath has been ordered by the Court to be removed from the film and take action on the creators as it was found to be instigating enmity between caste groups. The song though in circulation for some time was  not  a chart buster and no castes went  to war. Nor did any of the vocal Hinduvata  groups raise a storm over it at the time of release.

Lyricist K Ekadesi lines in Tamil translated asks - “Is the blood of a lower caste person a filth in gutter ?

Show me if the upper caste person has got horns!”.   A close look at the song promo of  the film shows Suriya marrying Aparna Balamurali with photos of Dr. Ambedkar and Periyar in the backdrop. In my search of info on Captain Gorur Ramaswamy Gopinath,I did not find any such happenings and also that his children too were married as per Brahmin rituals.

As the film was completed much before the NEET issue and suicides, these pro Dalit images and undercurrents were already in the film. Now the suicide issue crops up. The basic feel among everybody is that the kids whose parents who do not have the money to pay for donation to get a MBBS seat feel pressured  to get into the rank list and  the fear of the consequences if they failed  led them to take the extreme step. Till NEET is done away the parental pressure has to be stopped  till admission to medicine be on marks in the school be restored is the only way out.

Suriya has however brought in Dhrona, Ekalavya and Chanakya into his statement. This is a language that is used by the anti- caste or pro-Dalit groups and a far deviation from the statement he issued as head of Agaaram Foundation . This body helps underprivileged children’s education and Suriya had then talked only about the economic status that puts these kids at a disadvantage.

The TN State Assembly has now brought in a 7.5% quota for students of Government schools in the State quota held under NEET.  Suriya has welcomed this move.

 

The fact that Suriya being a Gounder, considered an upper land owning class has taken up for Dalit’s is definitely a bold move. His generalized statement like the High Court  barring personal hearings but allowing personal appearance for students to write exams,  the comments made in TV debates  which mocked at badly written suicide notes were uncalled for.

In Kabali too there were pro Dalit images and lines that supported them. It was understood as the director Pa Ranjith is a professed anti-caste activist and the central character is one from the lower rungs who rose to be a Don. In a film about a character who is a Brahmin and the actor who has so far not broached the topic and doing so at a time when his film is readying for an OTT release, makes it suspect. How many of the underprivileged have access to Smart TV and preloaded OTT apps in a State where suicides take place due to non availability of smart phones to study online lessons?
