South Films February Hits - Flops

Tollywood is the only thriving film market in February.  Kerala and Tamil Nadu have list of flops and disasters. A sole Pogaru of Dhruv is only consolation for Kannada filmdom. Chakra among Tamil films and  Sajan Bakery in Malayalam were expected to work but turned out to be biggest duds of the month

Andhra / TS

30 Films released including dubbed. Only three were hits but the collections starting from Uppena onwards is high and steady. Rs 200 per ticket at multiplex is accepted norm. Zombie Reddy that starred Teja Sajja in the lead role brought profits for the distributors, so is Allari Naresh’s Naandhi. The film brought success for Allari Naresh after nearly 8 years.

Uppena which released on February 12th is the biggest hit so far this year. The movie’s collections crossed the Rs. 50 Cr mark and is going very decent. Sumanth’s ‘Kapatadhaari’, Vishal’s ‘Chakra’ and Jagapathi Babu’s ‘FCUK  flopped.Nithiin’s Check failed to attract the audiences and the film is going towards the flop

Karnataka\

In Sandalwood , 19 Kannada films released and of this only Pogaru of Dhruv Sarja managed to get the crowds to theaters. Though the budget is on the high side as it was meant to test Dhruv’s   reach in other South States, it has managed to recover the cost and make a modest profit. In Tamil Nadu, collections were around Rs 1 crore only. The theaters – exhibitors are happy that they got Rs 50 lakhs as share when other Tamil films got them a few thousands. If the next time, a major promotion is done, Dhruv stands to be a saleable hero feels trade in TN.

Kerala

In Mollywood, 10 films hit the theaters. Love with Tom Shine Chacko and Vaanku on Jan 29 are included in the list. Love coming from a director who gave a hit film –Unda and fairly popular Tom was quite hyped up. In the theaters, it was a utter flop. It collected Rs 28 Lakhs in Kerala. The budget at Rs 3 cr is a surprise as a Tom film has not collected more than Rs 1.5 cr net . The film does not have anything to show for it in terms of locales. The money should have gone towards the director- cast- technicians. The film’s OTT release might have come as a consolation. Vaanku due to its touchy subject did get attention but it collected only Rs 11 lakhs and budget is Rs 2 cr. Only known face is Vineeth and Anaswara Rajan.

The biggest flop of Feb was Sajan Bakery Since 1962. Costing Rs 6 cr, the film collected Rs 61 lakhs only. Dhyan- Visakh Sreenivasan are producers and Aju Varghese –Lena- Ganesh kumar in the cast .  The film due to the producers clout would get a fairly good price for TV rights and added to it the OTT will help lessen the total loss tally.

Tamil Nadu

In Tamil, scenario is worst as there are no hits and only flops. The biggest flop is Chakra of Vishal. Made at Rs 35 lakhs, the film had only Rs 16 lakhs as net in TN. The  non star-cast film Kamali from Nadukaveri made at Rs 1 cr collected Rs 68 Lakhs and with OTT- TV rights will be a win for the producer. Dubbed Tom and Jerry too is a money spinner.  Paris Jeyraj the Santhanam film has more or less recovered 80% of the cost from theaters and OTT- TV should make the producer go without injury. Coming at Feb end , Vetrimaran- Manimaran combo with Samudrakanni  turned out to be a dud
