Update : We had asked the Periyarists to respond to the answer Yes to the query from an interviewer whether the film was about pitching God against Ramasamy ( Read Periyar) Selva responded to the Periyarist objections and said that he did not understand the question and should have been careful . He tendered his apologies , In fact the interviewer knowing that the answer if positive could trigger a controversy, gives him the option saying that you need only nod your head and Selva ponders over it. He smiles and says Yes. There is no sense of confusion in the face of Selva.
Review :Nenjam Marappathillai is a `pure Selvaraghavan film' and it is the God pitched against Ramasamy here like Ayirathil Oruvan was a veiled commentary on Eelam . This much I gathered from the interview of Selvaraghavan to Film Companion South. Now for me, the climax gives scope for a sequel .
The film has to be seen as a spoof on not only horror films that use Christian images but also on the Hong Kong Kung- fu movies , a statement on the influence of actors like Sivaji and MGR on the Tamil population even in present times, the police system being just a stage for rich to dance and sing, woman are equal and can vanquish men ( released to coincide with Women's day), fake socialist attitudes of rich men ( sharing drink- food and women with servants), importance of spoken English ( carrying pocket Dictionary ) and importance of cremation over burial.
The usage of Christian symbols , the Rockstar singing to handful of characters are all full of meanings loaded. Even the vintage car that comes into a Housing Board Colony and goes out in reverse gear has a deep meaning. Finally the RockStar keeps the guitar on the floor and walks away- a significant statement on the creative aspect.
I am wondering as to what the director would have described the role to S J Suryah. Very complicated role. I thought shortening of Ramasamy to Ramsay was a dig at the Ramsay Brothers. But I was wrong. People in US shorten their names to be one among the others and so Ramsay said the director in the interview.
Now the question is this pitching God against Ramasamy ? Yes says Selva. Periyarists take a call on this and do respond.
