Thalaivi movie review : Fine tuned for mass appeal not a fact file

Thalaivi is clear about the target audience- theater going youth. It gives lots of `masala' to keep to the aura around Late Jayalalithaa. The masala is however kept in right mix so as to not step on anybody's toes. Needless to say anything about Jayalaithaa cannot be complete without giving importance to MGR and this too has been done9 (some feel that detailing of MGR was better than than the Thalaivi). Kangana Ranaut as Jayalalithaa does  give her best but to Tamil version viewers the lip synch takes the bite away. Aravind Swami as MGR and Samudrakanni as RMV are two actors who stand out. In fact, Swami being the perfect foil to Kangana in the film is what saves the day.

The rise of a movie Queen who shifted to politics and fate made her the heir to a legacy left behind by her friend- lover boy is the story. There is nothing new that is thrown up in the film and those who have history at the fingertips will find faults. To those coming in with a mind to see recreation of Jayalaitha on celluloid will not be disappointed.  There is enough dialogues ( Madan Karky) to keep them whistling. If you are looking for some DMK bashing, then you will be disappointed.

Technically the film is fine but you get this feeling of you being reminded often that it is a period film. It does not just merge into the goings on and stands out.  G V Prakash BGM is good and it is a quite difficult job to do music for a film on a movie Star whose songs are still evergreen hits. An entertainer but  somewhere  in the middle it begins to slow down and hits a dead slow to  picks up pace..  I  would say that Mani Ratnam's Iruvar and Gautham Menon's web series Queen still is the best  as it has content while Thalaivi is full  of gloss.
