Writer Tamil movie review : Worth the watch

Coming from Pa Ranjith production house, Writer does talk about the police system that riddled with  caste discrimination – attitude to  RTI activists – suppression of human rights and inherent aversion to unions for lower ranks of police personnel.  Writer as advocates and criminals as well as SHO know is the pivotal post as he can  pin down a weak case or let in a few gaping holes in a strong case. Here it is such a writer in a station who not knowing that he is opening up a pandoras box by asking his journalist friend to write about a youth held in illegal custody gets caught  into a game of cover up and higher-up using him to be their pawn.

The screenplay is taut and has no boring moments. Samudrakanni as the writer , G M Sundar as lawyer, Dileepan, Iniya ( cameo)  and the actor who played the North Indian IPS officer are all very impressive. Music is apt and rightly placed. Cameraman without any gimmicks gives a straight visuals. One may say that Writer’s family story and back story of a thief are needless but I feel such distractions are needed.

I have read that Dalits in North India are fighting a battle to ride the bridal horse to the bride’s wedding. In Tamil Nadu or South , there is no such practice and this North guy taking umbrage at a Dalit girl seeking a post to be rider in the police cavalry is out of synch with viewers here. Iniya does a good job as the lady cop but does she not look too stylish for the role ?. At every point, cop and lawyer advises that  sign the confession and it can be changedt in the court hearing. Why does the writer not do it when it comes to himself?

On the whole, film offers lot of points to ponder. Worth the watch.

Directed and written by Franklin Jacob and produced by Pa.Ranjith along with Abhayanand Singh, Piyush Singh, and Aditi Anand, it is made under the banner of Neelam Productions in association with Golden Ratio Films, Little Red Car Films, and Jetty Productions.
