Kumar Mangat acquired the remake of Malayalam film Drishyam2 sequel of first part remade in Hindi from Ashwirwad Films, producers. Viaxom 18 who distributed the Drishyam Hindi remake film claimed that they had bought the rights to make any further sequel - adaptation to Drishyam and moved the court. Mangat said that he was going ahead with the work. Bombay High Court restrained Mangat from going ahead with any shooting till the case is decided.
Viacom 18 claims that the producers Wide Angle Creations and Raj Kumar Theatres Pvt Ltd by which it had the copyright to produce new films by adapting the movie Drishyam.as per a remake rights agreement.
The original film Drishyam story- screenplay is by Jeethu Joseph who also created the sequel and directed both versions. The producer of both the films is Ashirwaad owned by Antony Perumbavoor, aide of Mohanlal. Kumar Mangat floated Panorama Studios International with Ajay Devgn (who acted in Hindi remake) and acquired the sequel remake rights.
Legal circles say that Wide Angle might have acquired the remake rights including the copyright over the title Drishyam and subsequent adaptations to the original from Ashirwad. In that case Kumar Mangat cannot use the word for the sequel or in any publicity material. Also he cannot go back to the point from where the previous film ended and start from there.
Citing Hindi sequel to Singham, the producer and director have subsequently created their own content using the title. Here however there was no rights over the Tamil sequel to original Singham.Subsequent sequels in Tamil is remade under a different name and has no mention of Singham in Hindi remake. Director Jithu Joseph had remarked that Ajay was a wrong choice for the role reprised by Mohanlal. The Telugu sequel with Venkatesh is gearing up for an OTT release.
Nishikant who directed Drishyam remake passed away. Remake will be by Sujoy Ghosh, it is learnt. Tabu, Shriya Saran will also be part of the film.
