Pa Ranjith is in talks with author Ramchandra Guha to
direct a biopic on Palwankar Baloo , first Player from Dailt caste to don the Indian jersey for cricket
National team.
Several notable Dalit cricketers have
played for India, including Palwankar Baloo, Vinod Kambli, and T.
Natarajan. Palwankar Baloo, a left-arm spin bowler, is often cited as the
first Dalit cricketer to represent India. Vinod Kambli, known for his
talent and partnership with Sachin Tendulkar, also played for the national
team. More recently, T. Natarajan has made his mark on the Indian cricket
scene. Born in 1876, Baloo was a left-arm spin bowler who faced social
ostracism due to his Dalit identity but still achieved international
recognition. He is often considered India's first Dalit cricketer,
according to The Mooknayak English and Hindustan
Times.
Year back,
there was an announcement that Ajay Devgn is acting in a biopic of Baloo. This
too was said to be based on Guha’s book. Priti Sinha, daughter of Andaz Apna
Apna's producer Vijay Sinha, announced this development on her Twitter. In
the tweet, she confirmed, "Ajay Devgn, Tigmanshu Dhulia, and Priti Sinha
have teamed up to produce a film based on Ramachandra Guha's book 'A Corner Of
A Foreign Field'. The book tells the remarkable story of cricketer Palwankar
Baloo and his brothers." The director, cast, and crew for the film are yet
to be finalized.
Ranjith had
early planned to do a biopic on Munda but it did not move further.
