Kanguva: Flop in Theatres, Hit on OTT!

Suriya’s Kanguva may have struggled in theatres, but it’s now a sensation on Amazon Prime. Within just one week, the movie crossed 1 billion streaming minutes, setting a major record on OTT.

It’s surprising how audience preferences work—what fails on the big screen can become a blockbuster on streaming platforms. Times are changing, and so is the way we enjoy movies.

Thngalaan miserable OTT flop

Chiyaan Vikram this year had only one release, Thangalaan, that had a disastrous run at the box office, earning 71.45 crore worldwide. The film arrived on Netflix unceremoniously on December 10. However, it had a lukewarm response on OTT as well.

In the debut week of its OTT run, the Tamil action drama as per Netflix’s data from December 9 to December 15, garnered a viewership of 1.5 million. This is one of the least viewed South Indian films in its debut week on Netflix.

Here are the least viewed South Indian films in their debut week when they arrived on Netflix.

  1. Kondal: 1.7: Million
  2. Indian 2: 1.7 Million
  3. Bagheera: 1.7 Million
  4. Thangalaal: 1.5 Million
  5. Mr Bachchan1 Million

Why LOST LADIES LOST in OSCAR Before Race started?
On X from @rickykej
So, the Oscars shortlist is out. #LaapataaLadies is a very well made, entertaining movie (I enjoyed it), but was absolutely the wrong choice to represent India for the best #InternationalFeatureFilm category. As expected, it lost. When are we going to realize.. year after year.. we are choosing the wrong films. There are so many excellent movies made, and we should be winning the #InternationalFeatureFilm category every year! Unfortunately we live in a "Mainstream Bollywood" bubble, where we cannot look beyond films that we ourselves find entertaining. Instead we should just look for good films made by film-makers who are uncompromising in their art.. low budget or big budget.. star or no star.. just great artistic cinema. Below is the poster of #LaapataaLadies, I am sure most academy voting members dismissed the film just by looking at these.
