The web series on Annachi Late Rajagopal of Saravana Bhavan Hotel lusty affair that got him a life sentence that he did not serve is just the stuff that BJP and AIADMK looks to boost their image as the saviors of the underdogs, with local body polls coming. The real life plot does not throw up any surprises to viewers in a pan Indian way but will be of interest to the Tamil viewers for whom Saravana Bhavan Hotel is the last word in good veg food. Junglee Pictures, known for backing Talvar and Raazi, has got rights from Jeeva Jothi, whose husband was murdered by Annachi. Bhavani Iyer, known for films like Black, Lootera, and Raazi, will pen the story for the biopic on Jeevajothi.
Jeeva Jothi, the lady whose husband was murdered by henchmen of Annachi is today heading a very important post in BJP at Thanjavur. Soon after the SC verdict came upholding the life sentence of Annachi , Jothi told the media that as early as 2001, she met Jayalalithaa who was not in power then. She was asked to hold on and not give up the fight. After Jayalalithaa came to power, the tempo picked up, Jothi said that if Jayalalithaa was alive, she would have fallen at her feet and thanked her for the support. As time rolled by, Jothi found herself sitting in a top post in BJP. Why she did not choose AIADMK ?. Some say that it was her proximity to Sasikala, The biopic will probably give the answer.
The real life happenings that go with the case do not have any new to offer. Threat from moneyed bizman and kidnapping – murder by his henchmen, a double cross by a henchman to make a fast buck and the cops finally nailing Annachi for the murder. The rest of the years that Jothi spend in courts to keep the case going could probably be new avenue that scenarist Bhavani Iyer could throw light upon. It took 18 years to get a final decree on the case and that too from the apex court is no mean achievement. The years that Jothi fought the case remains in the dark. Was she helped by anybody to sustain herself in this case which needs money for lawyers and her own survival? Was there any big force that backed her up in these long years? As there is no mention of her having any known vocation that gave her a steady income, these questions crops up?
The trading community and especially the Nadar community would not be too happy to see a web series on Annachi and his lusty tales. He is considered in his community as a do- gooder and helpful to other traders. To the customers, the taste of the dosa and chutney matters and nothing else. Annachi’s followers still boast that he did not spend a day in jail as a convict. He had been behind bars soon after his arrest for murder. He was quoted by the New York Time Magazine reporter that he spend Rs 1 lakh a month to get home food in jail. There is an 8 part podcast by Sikhya Entertainments on Spotify. Sikhya has produced The Lunch Box, Shahid and in Tamil critically acclaimed hits Visaranai and Soorarai Pottru
