For some reason or the other, the film smells of a Telugu dubbed Tamil film and one cannot pin point it why this feeling. On the whole it is a mega serial condensed to 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Story: Vijay is one of the three sons who breaks away
from the family biz to set up his own as he does not want to live in the shadow
of his father Sarath Kumar. Now his Dad is down with cancer and son comes from
USA where he has a big biz empire. Now his coming back triggers the question as
to who will be Varisu ( heir) as Dad is down with cancer and counting his days.
His two brothers are in deep shit and has load of bad guys as relatives and
friends to usurp the Varisu post. Thalpathy has to prove his colours. How he
does it is the screenplay .
Varisu the Thalapathy Vijay film is one big collage of
several hit family entertainers in the 90’s and 80’s and a few elements that is
aimed for a Thalapathy fan. The bonding between
the family or the yearning of a son for the love of his parents does not
come out strong enough to get a lump in
the throat. Director Vamsi is on the presumption that all he has he has to do is give a few moments
for the fans to cheer and go wild and leave it to them to make it a
blockbuster.
If you can go gaga over a Vijay dancing in Ranjithamae
then you can enjoy this film as there is very little else for a fan to cheer.
Be it in the fight or songs, Vijay does give his best and as the director to
music director said that the entire focus was only to make Thalapathy fans
happy. Going from the First show reactions in not more than three to four
occasions ( leave the intro part), fans were seen cheering. The Vijay- Yogi
Babu comedy timing seemed to work in some parts.
The film starting from Sarath Kumar onwards to the
villain Prakash Raj is loaded with senior actors and none of them have much of
a footage. The only young guy around is Vijay and Shaam. Raashmika too suffers
the problem that happens to every heroine in a Thalapthy film- do the jhutka matka in skimmy clothes and
vanish. Sarath Kumar as the father would have laughed all to himself as it was
nothing but a shadow of roles that he perfected in the father- son dual role
family dramas during his hey days.
Technically excellent is one word for the whole film. Be it sound designing, art direction, cinematography or BGM, the film has no flaws. When it comes to music, even a Simbu- Anirudh does not prep up the score.
